About the Role

We are seeking SSP (VI/HI/MSI) all over the UK. Specialist Support Professional (Deaf Students, Vision Impairment, Multi-Sensory Impairment
We are looking for a qualified Teacher of the Deaf who has the ability to support, motivate and encourage students to develop and achieve their full potential. Ideally you will have experience in higher education establishment as you would be required to work mainly within colleges and universities. You will have the ability to be sensitive to pupils’ needs and learning styles and should have an interest in and understanding of additional support needs 
Main duties and responsibilities
Provide one-to-one study skills tuition to students enabling them to develop independent learning strategies.
To provide bespoke sessions for each student according to the needs of the individual student.
Manage paperwork effectively, i.e. completing time sheets and Individual Learning Plans
Comply with all Health and Safety and Risk Management policies and legislation whilst carrying out your duties.
To ensure confidentiality of student/teacher and college information and to comply with the Data Protection Act.
To participate in annual performance appraisals and undertake relevant staff development.
To participate in regular supervision as part of Safeguarding protocol.
To be responsible for the health and safety of self and others (in accordance with the Health & Safety Policy).

Onyx Student Support will seek to provide you with as many hours as are available.

Mandatory Qualifications


Skills Knowledge & Experience (HI/MSI ONLY)


Advisory Teacher for Deaf Students OR Advisory Teacher for Students with Multi-Sensory Impairments OR Teaching qualification (see below) and Registered Qualified British Sign Language (BSL) Interpreter OR Teaching qualification (See below options) plus specialist qualification in relevant subject e.g:

  • Deaf Studies

  • English

  • Linguistics

  • Deaf literacy specialist qualification

  • Deaf Awareness qualification (specific to language acquisition) etc.


Skills Knowledge & Experience (VI/MSI ONLY)


Advisory Teacher for Students with Vision Impairments OR Advisory Teacher for Students with Multi-Sensory Impairments OR Teaching qualification (See below) plus specialist qualification in relevant subject

Teaching qualifications will be accepted at Level 4 and above, including:

  • Associate Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA)

  • Certificate of Education (Cert Ed)

  • Diploma in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (DELTA) Level 7

  • DTTLS (Diploma in teaching in the lifelong learning sector

  • Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE/PgCert.ED)

  • Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) in Primary Education

  • Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) Post Primary education

  • Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education (PGCHE)

  • Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice (PGCAP)

  • Postgraduate Certificates in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)

  • Qualified Teacher Learning & Skills (QTLS)

  • Diploma in Education & Training (DET)

  • Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (PGCTLHE)
